Specialized Programs
Based on student interest, some schools offer specialized programs in a variety of areas. Programs will be of interest to few students at a limited number of school sites. These programs require specialized facilities, equipment or funding.
HWDSB offers interested students transportation to these programs if they live out of the school catchment. Specialized Tier 3 programs (including SHSMs) open to students beyond the school catchment based on their geographical location. Each specialized program will have a program boundary beyond the school boundary.
We have three categories of Specialized Tier 3 programs: Specialized Non-SHSM Programs, Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Programs, and Intervention and Support Programs. Ask your guidance counsellor for more specific details and locations of these programs.
ArtSMART Theatre Program
Art SMART is a theatre program at Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School for students in Grade 11 and above. It runs in the afternoons (11:30am – 2:05pm) Semester 1 and Semester 2. Our goal is to stage a full Broadway show at the end of May for a variety of audiences. Art SMART students participate on stage as performers or support behind the scenes (set / costumes / props / lighting / sound) based on their interests in various aspects of theatre. Students can earn credits in Co-Op, Drama, Musical Theatre, Production Design, Construction Technology and more! It is important to check with your guidance counsellor to ensure your credits satisfy Ontario Secondary Diploma requirements. Art SMART is open to students from any school.
It is recommended that students complete Grade 9 and 10 before applying so that there is more flexibility in timetables for their Art SMART classes. You can choose to join for just one semester or for up to two years.
Art SMART uses several unique learning spaces at Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School:
-
Woodshop & Manufacturing Shop – learn set construction and installation techniques using a variety of tools and machinery.
-
Cosmetology/Hair Salon- design makeup and hair for the show in the functional salon space run by our certified Cosmetology teaching staff.
-
Rehearsal Studio – dance and rehearse in this bright, beautiful space, featuring a professional dance floor, ballet barres, and mirror wall.
-
Fashion Design Studio – devise and construct costumes in this newly renovated space, outfitted with sewing machines, sergers, and all the tools needed to fabricate designs.
-
Art & Photography Studio – set and prop designs come to life in the art studio and photography lab.
-
Theatre – the 600-seat auditorium gives performers a professional theatre experience, while students interested in lighting & sound design use industry-standard technology. Recent upgrades include a new 32-channel digital sound mixer and wireless backstage communication system.
Semester 1: focuses on pre-production, design and skill building. Students learn how Broadway musicals are staged through hands-on workshops and field trips (Theatre Aquarius, The Stratford Festival, Mirvish Toronto, and more.) They participate in performance tasks to build acting, singing, and dancing skills. Auditions for the show take place before the winter break in December, along with a Winter Showcase performance. Students who are not performing will design and create costumes, props, and sets. These designers create mock-ups and design presentations, jumping into the creation of sets, props, costumes, and more.
Semester 2: Rehearsals begin! Performers rehearse the show, while Designers continue their production work. The show will run during the first 3 weeks of May (exact dates TBA).
Interested students should reach out to [email protected] to discuss next steps. Our team is happy to discuss the program in more detail, learn about a student’s unique goals, and offer a chance to ask any questions about the program.

Self-Paced, Self-Directed Programming
Westmount Secondary School (WSS) is a system school at which students from across HWDSB strive to develop skills in the areas of goal setting, effective time management and independent learning in a self-directed, self-paced learning environment. Westmount’s graduation requirements and course offerings are consistent with all HWDSB secondary schools.
In this self-directed, self-paced learning environment, launched in 1990, Westmount students are expected to manage their learning time and determine with teachers how to demonstrate their learning. Enriched programming does not lead to additional or different course credits than a regular academic course as defined by the Ministry of Education. Students are provided enriched tasks for their learning but it is based upon a common set of overall learning expectations and is the same in all streams.
Please note there is no transportation provided for this program.

Strings
Students in the Strings program study the performance, creation and analysis of classical music into the 21st century. With beginner and advanced courses, the program builds on strings instruction at HWDSB elementary schools or in the community. It is offered in partnership with the Instrumental Music Program, which includes offerings in vocal, instrumental, guitar, keyboard and the performing arts. This can lead to a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) designation in Arts and Culture. As a Tier 3 HWDSB program, students from any HWDSB secondary school can attend. Located at Glendale Secondary School.
Steps to Graduation (S2G)
Steps to Graduation replaces the former WIPP Program in supporting disengaged students with employment skills while allowing them an opportunity to earn senior English credits. The new name – Steps to Graduation (S2G) – reflects the evolving goals of this program and ensures clarity in how it serves the students.
Steps to Graduation (S2G) will continue to prioritize the successful elements of WIPP through a rebranding that is reflective of the program goal – to create an actionable graduation plan for students who have withdrawn from or are in the process of withdrawing from their secondary school. S2G will use various steps to help students earn their OSSD. These steps may include PLAR, paid co-op, senior English, and mathematics credits as well as opportunities for certifications which support the attainment of a Business SHSM. Like WIPP, classes will be taught at Hill Park and over MS Teams. Individualized student schedules are developed to support student needs and their employment schedules. Steps to Graduation is a continuous intake program.
Acceptance into the program will be based upon spaces available with preference given to students who:
- Are eligible for PLAR
- Have demonstrated success in the apprenticeship, college, university or workplace pathways
- Have current or previous work experience
- Are committed to participating in an active change to their future
For more information, please contact S2G teacher Mike Armstrong [email protected]
